… getting the hole the right way round …

The concept of a tunnel through Space has been a science fiction staple and has been investigated as a theoretical possibility since the 1930″s.

The Einsteinian concept of TimeSpace introduced an idea of a physical nature to the Space we inhabit as being related to the Vacuum of interplanetary Outer-Space. This Time-Space stuff can be affected by the mass of bodies (such as Planets and Stars) causing it to deform and stretch; that deformation, or Curvature, was the means by which Gravitation worked.

SpaceTime had infinite properties.
Contemporary Physics and Astrophysics gives qualities of transmittability of forces/energies in Space of Permittivity (Electric Charge) and Permeability (ElectroMagnetism).
The Curvature of Space by Black-Holes/Singularities has limits described by Schwarzschild (which also determine the shapes of planets and their Gravitational effect). The speed with which matter can travel through Space is limited to “the Speed of Light” – the energy input for Thrust becomes Infinite (which is impossible) and the curvature of Space caused by the moving object also becomes infinite (“weight becomes infinite”).

These things point to Space being unable to be infinitely stretched by any source.

Wormhole theories often require a gravitational source (or two) to stretch a region of Space which would act as a tunnel through which one-way travel would occur.

There is a connected idea of creating small regions of warped space around a vessel to “somehow” allow faster-than-light travel. Ideas of warp “bubbles” or “bottles” which are propelled by various methods. If the warp-bubble is enclosed then where is the exhaust for propulsion?
(My own work-around for this includes the ability to open-and-close areas of the bubble to allow thrust. But, that also has problems which I will discuss later.)

One popular solution is for the warp-drive to “lessen” Space ahead of the vessel while “increasing” the Soace behind it.
It sounds like a Jet engine of Space but also like the higher-pressure-under-but-lower-pressure-over-the-wings of atmospheric flight.

The main progress in the “warp-bubble” concept has been calculations that near-infinite energy is not required to create such bottles. The methodology of creating such bubbles and the means of creating the energy to do so are still theoretical.
Just saying “antimatter” and “quantum quantum quantum” are not enough.
Theoretical computational models can SHOW that Space “is” bent IN THE MODEL in order to do something but that does not tell you “HOW to bend space” or HOW “your exotic matter powerstation/jet-engine” works.
It doesn’t even tell you from where you are going to get your exotic matter or if you do get it how you are going to handle it.

A flaw that I see with wormholes as theorised is that they will still have Space inside them. The concept of infinitely-stretchy Space made it seem that one region of Space stretched would be like one-moment-of-SpaceTime-being-infinitely-stretched; that One-Moment infinitely-stretched gives you your wormhole.

My alternate take on this is that Space is quantized and granular. It is observed that the Universe is expanding and that that expansion is accelerating.
As SpaceTime cannot be a perfect Euclidean membrane or bloc that has no individual particles composing it, it has to be made of some divisble material.
It also must be being added to by the creation of new “particles” of Space.
Where do those Space-particles come from? I have no idea but I assume that there is decay of matter or an unknown effect of an already known process which creates more Space-particles.

Such an idea also means that at the “beginning” of the Universe there was no Space. Rather than an explosion that filled an empty void; the Universe is expanding by the inflation of its components by combinations of mutual repulsion and the physical effects of Space-particles emerging by the decay of matter or by another process.

Properties that such Space-particles have would be the explanation of observed behaviour of matter, energy and forces.
Allowing Relativistic travel below the Speed-of-Light at mundane speeds but also allowing galaxies to appear to be moving apart faster than the Speed-ofd-Light due to Space-particles emerging at rates higher than the Universe’s speed limit.
Those particles need not be limited to the Speed-of-Light themselves but energy, matter and forces would be so limited.

It is agreed that SpaceTime can be curved by massive planet-&-star sized masses; if SpaceTime can be formed into a closed sphere (“a bubble”) then, potentially, that bubble could travel faster than the Speed-of-Light.

But, what is inside such a bubble?

A warp-bubble could contain SpaceTime but if the walls of the bubble are cohesive (aligned) then it need not contain Space; it could be empty. Such an empty space would be void.
Theories of “What preceded the Big Bang?” propose membranes or energy fields. A warp-bubble devoid of Space may still have something else within.

Now, imagine constructing in Space a structure to contain a warp-bubble millions of miles long without SpaceTime within it?
If you could enter it, it would not necessarily mean instant travel. Propulsion (chemical rockets, ionic thrusters) probably would not work.
So, you have a megastructure millions of miles long containing a warpspace-tunnel which you may not be able to enter and if you could open it and enter it you may not be able to travel in it.
Worse still; entering the warp-bubble may cause you and your ship to implode/explode as matter needs SpaceTime to have form.

The only small bit of comfort I could give is that if you can create a void in a warp-bubble then you probably could create a warp-bubble with SpaceTime “around” (“permeating”) your ship.
So, you could enter the warp-bubble but be unable to go anywhere.
