I have learnt the true meaning of horror with the revelation that “some people” think that Accelerometers show “upwards acceleration” when “at rest”.
Trying to explain why that is a major error has proven hilarious as the person who is responsible for instigating this mistake is none other than Albert Einstein himself.
The example of 1-Gravity of Thrust experienced in a Rocket being equivalent to 1-Gravity of Gravity experienced on the surface of the Earth was described by Einstein. From that, it has been declared that there is 1-Gee of “Upwards Force” due to the Earth’s Gravity. The “proof” of that Upwards Force has been seen in the readings taken from Accelerometers.
I take this view :- Accelerometers are not the correct tool to measure Gravity.
They are designed to register changes in direction and velocity by the movement of mechanical parts (they may be electro-mechanical parts) in relation to each other. The motion caused by a push causes the components to measure an opposite of that motion which is then interpreted as motion in the direction of the push.
You push something to the left – the device registers an opposite motion in its components to the right – it then shows you the strength of the push to the left.
It need not be a push. It could be a pull. The Accelerometer is incapable of knowing the difference.
The issue is in expecting an Accelerometer to interpret the downwards force of Gravity as an upwards acceleration. It’s an Accelerometer. It is doing what it is designed to do. It is the wrong tool for measuring Gravity.
It gives a correct speed of acceleration but due to its mechanism it indicates that that force is in the wrong direction.
Incorrectly calibrated devices have caused many problems. Misinterpretation of readings is a problem familiar to many.
If you ask Google how long a rocket can accelerate at 1-G, it will tell you about six months, It will also tell you (it implies) that there is not enough energy in the Universe for the rocket to maintain that acceleration. At the point it would reach light speed it would require an infinite amount of energy.
The Earth has maintained “1-G of downwards acceleration” for billions of years.
Thrust and Gravity are not the same.
Take into consideration that about 22 thousand miles up there is microgravity. While at “sea level”, there is about 1-G of Gravity. So … at the centre of the Earth?
At the centre of the Earth gravity is much higher.
The Core is the greatest region of Gravity. At that place there is higher compression of material due to length contraction caused by Gravity. According to the logic of the Upwardists, this is where the Upwards Force is greatest. Then, why is there the compaction of material?
Inside stars the compression is far greater than at the Earth’s Core. Fusion processes and Thermal energy causes pressure which pushes against the influence of a star’s internal Gravity. That process is not the same as the alleged Upwards Force.
The Upwardist Force would make the Earth’s Core and the Sun’s interior less dense than materials at the Earth’s surface. So, Upwards Force does not exist. The prosaic Downwards-Attractive Force of Gravity still holds as accurate.
Let me finish with one more analogy :-
A weather vane points where it is blown. If the wind is coming from the North North West it is said to be going toward South South East.
A weathervane cam be designed to point in the direction that the wind is coming from; it can designed to move toward the direction of the wind, or you can just put a “fake pointer” on the opposite end.
You could even change how you describe the winds. A wind coming from the South blowing North? Call it a Northernly!
